Get Defined Curls Every Single Time with the FroPop! Method
My go-to system for bouncy, juicy curls that actually last.
If you’ve ever wondered why your curls don’t always turn out the same on wash day, you’re not alone. Curl definition can feel random — some days your hair pops, other days it’s frizzy, flat, or uneven. After years of experimenting with different routines, I created a method that gives me consistent definition every single time. I call it the FroPop! Method, and it’s the exact system I use on every wash day to get curls that look juicy, springy, and full of bounce.
This method isn’t just a list of random steps. It’s designed to give your hair the clean slate, deep hydration, product layering, and styling technique it needs for maximum definition. The best part, is it works across most curl types, as long as you follow the steps carefully.
Step 1: Start with a True Clean Slate
The FroPop! Method always begins with cleansing. Curls can’t “pop” if they’re coated in oils, buildup, or heavy products. That’s why clarifying or double shampooing is the foundation of this routine.
Low and medium porosity hair: Double shampoo or use a clarifying shampoo. These hair types are more prone to buildup because products often sit on top of the strand. A deep clean ensures your conditioner and stylers can actually penetrate.
High porosity hair: You don’t need to double shampoo, but you should still use a good quality regular shampoo (not just co-wash). High porosity strands absorb easily, so one thorough cleanse is usually enough.
By the way, water alone won’t reset your curls. Oils and dirt don’t rinse off without shampoo, so skipping this step is one of the biggest mistakes people make before styling.
Step 2: Deep Condition for 30 Minutes
Once your scalp and strands are clean, it’s time to add strength and flexibility back into the hair with a deep conditioner. The FroPop! Method always calls for a 30-minute deep condition. That’s the sweet spot for letting ingredients absorb and repair your strands.
Low and medium porosity hair: Always use heat or steam. The cuticle layer on these strands is tighter, so warmth helps conditioner penetrate.
High porosity hair: Heat isn’t necessary, but the full 30 minutes still matter. High porosity strands take in product quickly, but they need time for it to work and seal in properly.
Skipping this step or rushing it weakens your curls. Strong, flexible hair is what gives curls their bounce.

Step 3: Apply a Light Leave-In
After rinsing, section hair, detangle well (I prefer a tangle teezer), and apply a small amount of leave-in conditioner while your hair is still damp. This sets the base for moisture and slip without weighing your curls down. The key here is just enough — too much leave-in can cause buildup and stop your curls from clumping properly.
Think of this step as priming your hair. It gives the hair moisture to hold onto while keeping the strands soft and manageable while we get into the next step.
Step 4: Layer on Your Curl Definer
This is the heart of the FroPop! Method: applying a curl-defining gel, custard, or cream. Mousse isn’t part of this routine. Instead, you need a product that’s made to create clumps and give lasting hold.
One detail that makes or breaks this step is whether your leave-in and curl definer actually mix well together. A quick way to check is to put a tiny bit of each product on your hand and blend them. If the mixture looks smooth and silky, you’re good to move forward. If it turns clumpy or starts balling up, that combo won’t work in your hair — you’ll need to swap out one product until you find a pair that blends cleanly. It can definitely feel tedious, but once you find that golden combination, you’ll have never have to guess ever again.
The trick is not just what you use, but how you apply it:
Work on damp/wet hair
Work in thin, small sections for even coverage
Apply product as close to the root as possible (without touching the scalp) to stop puffiness and keep curls uniform from top to bottom
Smooth the product downwards so every strand is coated evenly
Step 5: Brush for Maximum Pop
Once your gel or cream is applied, it’s time to use your tool. The FroPop! Method always involves a Bounce Curl Defining brush or Denman brush. The brush creates even clumps and defines curls in a way finger detangling alone can’t.
Here’s the key detail: always brush under the section of hair, not over it. This motion lifts the curls, gives them spring, and sets them in a way that gives them the signature “pop.” It’s one of the most overlooked but essential parts of the method.
Step 6: Seal with Oil (LCO Method)
The final product step is oil. After your leave-in and curl definer, a light oil seals everything in. This is what makes the FroPop! Method follow the LCO structure: Leave-in, Curl definer, Oil.
Low porosity: A lighter oil (like Grapeseed oil) works best since strands don’t absorb easily.
High porosity: A richer oil or butter (like Argan oil) helps lock in moisture that would otherwise escape.
This step keeps definition lasting longer and prevents frizz from creeping in too soon.
Step 7: Diffuse, Don’t Air Dry
Air drying is forbidden in the FroPop! Method. For real definition, you must diffuse. Air drying often leads to frizz, uneven shrinkage, and curls that fall flat. Diffusing sets the shape quickly and locks it in as the hair dries. You will definitely get more shrinkage, but that’s the trade off for bouncy, shiny curls.
You can diffuse on low, medium, or high heat depending on what your hair tolerates, but diffusing itself is non-negotiable. It’s what gives the FroPop! finish: defined, lifted, and long-lasting curls.
Step 8: Hands Off Until It’s Dry
The final rule is simple: once you’ve styled, don’t touch. Playing with curls while they dry creates frizz, disrupts the cast, and ruins definition. Once fully dry, you can scrunch out the crunch with a bit of oil in your hands, if your gel leaves a cast. Until then, let the diffuser do the work.
Why the FroPop! Method Works
The FroPop! Method works because it gives your hair exactly what it needs in the right order:
Cleanse away buildup so products actually work
Deep condition for strength and bounce
Prime with leave-in for softness
Define with gel or cream from the root down
Brush under for even clumps
Seal with oil for moisture lock
Diffuse to set shape quickly
By combining these steps, you create a system that consistently produces bouncy, juicy curls.
